Our History

The New Mexico Suicide Intervention Project (NMSIP), a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, was established in 1994 in response to growing concern about the increasing number of youth suicides in Santa Fe County and Northern New Mexico.

NMSIP’s  services are recognized “best practices” by the Centers for Disease Control and the New Mexico Department of Health.

NMSIP’s eight member board of directors reflects a cross-section of the Santa Fe community and is comprised of individuals with a broad spectrum of knowledge and expertise.

Since its inception, NMSIP has implemented numerous prevention services to decrease risk behaviors related to suicide and increase resiliency and family support.  NMSIP has received public recognition for its achievements, including:

  • Santa Fe Community Foundation Piñon Award, for Excellence in Health and Human Services, 2000
  • New Mexico Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, for Excellence in efforts to improve the well-being of New Mexico families, 2002
  • Santa Fe New Mexican, “Ten Who Made a Difference”, for work in the field of youth suicide in Santa Fe County, 2004
  • United Way of Santa Fe County Award, for Improving Health and Healing, 2005

NMSIP offers a model of collaboration that promotes the health of youth, families, and communities.
